I
chose the term computer programming because it is something so prevalent today.
This is a very god field to look for work in because the position is in
such high demand. One of the articles I found in The Chicago Tribune from
1968 was talking about a new
computer school that will be opening up soon.
It is a place where high school graduates can go to learn computer
programming. This reminded me a lot of community colleges and how they
have specializations in certain industries that need specific job training.
The article talked about how it would be the first branch of the school
in Chicago. It likely suggests that there may have been other computer
programming schools in the area and it shows that this is the time when people
started to learn about computer programming to use in a career. One thing I
noticed when reading the article is that writer said students could "have
their pick of jobs in today's market." This is very similar to what
we experience today in my opinion because computer programming has a very
strong job market. Another thing that caught my attention were the
"computer languages" they mentioned. I have never heard of
these and they're definitely not the languages today's programmers are using.
So there has obviously been a lot of progression in computer programming.
I don't think the definition of the term "computer programming"
has really changed at all from the past, just more so the activity itself has
progressed. It is very important and relevant in today's society and will
prove to be so as well in the future.
