Attempt to Unplug
This past weekend, I did my best to stay unplugged for as long as possible. I was able to last until the middle of the day on Saturday, when I realized how truly difficult it was to communicate while unplugging. I spent my day on Friday communicating by strictly talking face to face, avoiding sending text messages, snapchats, etc. It felt strange at first to not be checking various social media outlets at all times, and not holding my phone in my hand all day long. It actually turned out to be a liberating experience, and it felt good to escape the virtual world for a day and a half. Unplugging made me realize that our generation must be vastly different than any one before us. It amazes me that people were successfully able to always communicate without cell phones or computers. I also realized that many social media outlets people use serve little to no real purpose, but serve as entertainment and a way to communicate for our generation. Overall, unplugging was an interesting experience, but ultimately made me realize that the world is generally dependent on being plugged in at all times in order to communicate and achieve tasks.

Wow Jacob, that is interesting insight. I would definitely have to agree with you about how dependent our society is on being plugged in today. I think a lot of it stems from people's fear of missing out on social experiences that are taking place online. What do you think the future holds for us as we move more and more into this information society?
ReplyDeleteIt is really interesting to see all across the board every person's struggle to stay unplugged. I am guilty just like the rest of us. hopefully one day we can figure out a way to put the technology aside and interact face to face more
